@[]##WHEN ONE SMALL THING LEADS TO CHAOS#WE BLEW IT#TURNED OUT BAFFLING AGAIN
Lorenz first published his theory in 1963 in an article entitled Deterministic Non-Periodic Flow. His theory remained largely unknown outside meteorological circles until the mid-Seventies#Lorenz's theory was part of a wider Chaos movement. Many other American scientists were developing theories which in effect said: "We were wrong to think we could tame the world with science. However much we think we know, the universe can still surprise us." #Although he trained as a mathematician, Lorenz had been fascinated by meteorology since he was a boy, and became a weather forecaster in the army during the Second World War#The "Butterfly Effect" has a technical name - it's called Sensitive Dependence on Initial Conditions#The computer upon which Lorenz first worked out his theory was less powerful than a modern day laptop
